Prostatitis is one of the sexually transmitted diseases and is a condition characterized by inflammation of the prostate. Most often it is caused by a bacterial infection, but it can also occur after unprotected sexual contact.
In this article we decided to talk a little about this condition and how important it is to protect yourself during sexual intercourse.
The importance of protection during sexual intercourse and prevention of prostate diseases
Prostatitis is a condition that can be caused by bacteria that are transmitted through unwanted sexual intercourse, and many doctors claim that any bacteria that triggers a urinary tract infection can also cause prostatitis. In general, prostatitis that has a bacterial cause begins suddenly with symptoms such as fever, chills, lower abdominal pain, fatigue, and a great deal of discomfort when urinating and ejaculating. Prostatitis can be acute and chronic and it has been shown that less than 5% of diagnosed prostatitis cases are caused and triggered by a bacterial infection. Among all the risk factors for the appearance of prostatitis due to bacterial causes, there are also sexually transmitted diseases, unprotected sex, and especially anal sex.
Chlamydia trachomatis – chlamydia, but also the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae – gonorrhea are among the few examples of sexually transmitted bacteria that can also cause a condition called prostatitis. The risk of prostatitis caused by a bacterium that is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact is much higher among people who have multiple sexual partners and those who often have anal sex.
The risk of prostatitis can be reduced by having protected sex.
Prostatitis that has a bacterial cause and is sexually transmitted is a treatment that is done through antibiotic therapy. In general, antibiotics are administered for 8 weeks if we are talking about acute prostatitis, to reduce the risk of recurrence, implicitly, that of chronic disease. In the case of chronic prostatitis, antibiotic treatment is administered for a longer period, implicitly, for 12 weeks, so that the condition is completely combated. There are also cases where it is necessary to administer a permanent treatment with antibiotics, but it is administered in much lower doses.
How to identify the symptoms of prostatitis and when to go to the doctor
It is recommended that the person suffering from this condition, identify prostatitis at an earlier stage its symptoms and go very quickly to the urologist to have a specialist consultation. The faster this condition is diagnosed and treated, the less the quality of life will be affected, but also the sexual quality of the partner.
Next, you will find out what symptoms an alarm signal should trigger.
- Intensification of urination frequency, both during the day and at night
- Loss of abstinence when they need to urinate occurs
- Urinary retention, which is manifested by the inability to empty the bladder, but also by the weak jet of urine or by difficulties in initiating urination
- Pain in the lower abdomen, in the rectal or groin area, which is triggered or intensified especially when urinating/ejaculating
- Fever, chills, general malaise
- The presence of blood in the urine or semen
- Muscle aches throughout the body
- Nausea, vomiting
- Low back pain
When you have these symptoms, you should go to the doctor immediately, and he will perform a history, but also a physical examination and a urine test.
Following these tests and depending on the doctor’s suspicions about your diagnosis, you can do day tests, sperm tests, imaging tests, a digital rectal examination, and, if necessary, even a biopsy.
If the diagnosis of bacterial prostatitis is established, antibiotic treatment is started immediately, which has the role of eliminating the bacteria, in conclusion, eliminating the problem. In parallel with this treatment, anti-inflammatory drugs and alpha-blockers will be administered to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms.
The person suffering from this condition must hydrate very well during this period, to accelerate the process of eliminating bacteria from the body.
At the same time eliminate and avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine. These exacerbate the unpleasant symptoms of prostatitis.
Hot water compresses and sitting baths relieve the unpleasant symptoms of this condition and temporarily improve the physical and mental condition of the patient suffering from prostatitis. In addition to this condition, which occurs only among men, many diseases and infections are sexually transmitted.
What are sexually transmitted diseases?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) also called venereal diseases are infections caused by various bacteria, parasites, viruses and are most often transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sexual contact. Some STD infections are transmitted through the blood or products used in contact with the blood, such as infusions, syringes, and are not caused by unprotected sexual activity. Certain forms of STDs can be transmitted by the infected mother directly to the fetus during pregnancy, at birth, or through breastfeeding.
Depending on the source of infection, sexually transmitted diseases can be:
1. Caused by bacteria such as:
Gonorrhea – N. gonorrhea,
Syphilis – Treponema pallidum,
Chlamydia – Chlamydia trachomatis.
2. Caused by protozoa – parasites:
Tricomonaza -Trichomonas vaginalis.
3. Caused by external parasites:
Pubic lice or wide lice – Pthirius pubis;
Scabies – Sarcoptes scabiei.
4. Caused by viruses:
Genital Herpes – Herpes Simplex Virus / HSV;
Papilloma virus infection – Human Papillomavirus / HPV;
Human immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS – human immunodeficiency virus or HIV;
Hepatitis B – liver virus B;
Hepatitis C- hepatitis C virus.
Sexually transmitted diseases can occur without symptoms, ie asymptomatic, with mild or acute symptoms. In the case of Chlamydia infection, for example, about 50% of men and 75% of affected women have no symptoms, and they can spread the bacteria to healthy sexual partners. Also, in the case of infections caused by viruses, the symptoms can be mild, as is the case of herpes simplex infection, but the consequences can be serious on the sexual partners. Infections caused by bacteria and parasites can be completely treated if diagnosed in time, but for those caused by viruses, there are only supportive treatments, which improve the health of the affected person, without curing it. Early diagnosis and follow-up of appropriate treatment are essential for the management of STDs.
Depending on the source of infection, some STDs can be cured, for others, there is only one supportive treatment. STDs are dangerous diseases because they often manifest asymptomatically, with sick people spreading the infection unknowingly, and can severely affect the health of others, and even babies and children.
